7.0 Symmetrical Sequence: 2 Elements, 1 Altered (advanced)

rhythm-of-two-systemsOpposing sequences working in harmony. This type of exercise relies on similar qualities such as combining individual symmetries getting contrasted, but to a slight degree. We’re talking about a slight degree of order vs. intuition, precision vs. chance, or chaos vs. stability – that kind of thing.

It’s your turn! Create your own version of a multi-symmetrical rhythm with one altered sequence in which one sequence is altered and a wee bit restless, while the other sequence is entirely rational. Details: On a sheet of paper, draw a large square. Next, draw a symmetrical arrangement of variously sized circles but compose it so that your arrangement of circles “bleeds” over the edge of the drawn square. (Your circles can even overlap with one another as long as the entire arrangement is symmetrical.) Erase any excess that goes beyond the square.

On a second sheet of paper, draw a similarly sized square. Draw a second symmetrical arrangement circles, but make them all the same size and place the arrangement in the middle of the drawn square.

On a third sheet of paper, trace each of the symmetrical circle arrangements so as to combine them both. Make one system darker or brighter than the other to make one system more dominant over the other. No need to trace the larger square. Take a photo. When you’re done, post your exercise to Facebook, Pinterest, or Instagram.
